In Boyfriend Dungeon, love is a very, very different type of battlefield

Is it a dungeon crawler or a dating simulator? Turns out, those two genres don't have to be mutually exclusive to one another, as developer Kitfox has figured out a way to incorporate the best of both into a singular title. Boyfriend Dungeon is a game about exploring hazardous caverns using the most H-to-T weapons you'll ever find. This is, of course, because these weapons also transform into exceptionally attractive people that you must woo over, using flirtations and romantic getaways in order to recruit them to your cause.

Much like the classic tale of Arthur pulling the sword Excalibur from stone, so too does Boyfriend Dungeon's protagonist acquire weaponry through a rite of passage - albeit one that is slightly less magical and more akin to several rounds of speed-dating. Just as a traditional dungeon crawler would feature weapons possessing unique traits and attributes, each weapon in Boyfriend Dungeon has its own sensual personality represented by Blind Date-esque "likes" and "dislikes". Players will discover these weapons and level up their effectiveness through the process of "bonding", which is achieved through whispering sweet nothings and extravagant gestures of romance.

Despite its name, Boyfriend Dungeon does not subscribe to any particular gender binary or sexual orientation when it comes to its matchmaking, and includes a diverse selection of candidates spanning the identity spectrum. The effort to be inclusive is a most-welcome gesture, and Kitfox even goes a step further by incorporating a cat, of all things, into a pair of feisty looking brass knuckles - though I dare not delve into the implications of this feline being a part of the game's dating pool.

According to its Steam Page, some of Boyfriend Dungeon's more notable features include:

  • Date up to nine weapons, from dancing swords to heart-piercing daggers
  • Generated action-combat dunj and challenges! Stay sharp!
  • Various combat styles. For example, hit hard and dodge quickly with the dagger, or take on crowds with Lasersaber
  • Inclusive, tasteful approach to gender and sexuality - male, female, and non-binary romance
  • Let's get to the point: take your weapon-babes on romantic outings, such as to the club or the beach

If you're looking forward to fight hard and thirst even harder, Kitfox says that Boyfriend Dungeon will be released "when weapons are beautiful enough". Though, by that metric, it should be safe to say that we'll be seeing a 2019 release.
