While you wouldn't be entirely amiss for assuming that the delightfully silly 2D beat 'em up Castle Crashers was already available on Nintendo's handheld, it's actually only just getting its long-awaited portable release next month.
Earlier this morning, developer Behemoth announced via blog post and hype trailer that the remastered version of Castle Crashers would be coming to Switch on September 17th, with a PS4 release scheduled for sometime later.
In addition to featuring improved textures and all previous DLC, keen-eyed players will find that the FPS has been upped from the original's 30 to a smoldering 60 FPS.
The release of Castle Crashers on the Switch and PS4 is a long-time coming, and Behemoth acknowledges that the studio hasn't serviced a Sony or Nintendo console in nearly a decade. As a result, development on these ports encountered some unforeseen roadblocks that halted their release.
Although Castle Crashers Remastered has been around for quite some time, we haven’t brought a game to a Sony system since the PlayStation 3, or a Nintendo console since the GameCube. We’ve gone generations in between then and now, and while we’re beyond excited to be bringing Castle Crashers to modern consoles, making that leap has come with a number of difficult development challenges. Some of these challenges took us longer than expected to work through; in fact, the PlayStation 4 version of the game is still going through it’s final approval processes, which is why we are not yet confirming it’s exact launch date. However, we wanted to take our time to make sure that when we launch the game it is complete, polished, and the best quality it can be.
What's important, however, is that Castle Crashers can now be enjoyed by a whole new audience and in ways that I believe accentuate its particular style of gameplay. Co-op will still be the major draw here, and players will be able to matchmake online to crash castles with old and new friends alike.
