A playable, albeit early version of Dead Island 2 has leaked online, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, has already been downloaded and played by a sizable number of people eager to creatively mow down hordes of the walking dead.
Confirmed by Eurogamer to be a bonafide build from 2015, you'll likely recognize the beach town setting as being reminiscent of the E3 trailer that originally premiered way back in 2014. Though placeholder assets are aplenty and the zombie animations aren't exactly great, the signature Dead Island DNA is still very much present.
Details are unclear as to the leaker's identity or their relationship to the project, but what is known is that the files for this early build first surfaced on 4chan sometime in the last 72 hours. Since then, numerous videos of folks playing have sprouted up on Youtube, so take your pick if you're interested in seeing more of the Dead Island 2 that never was.
It should be noted that this version of Dead Island 2 is perhaps the last remaining relic of a time when Spec Ops: The Line developer Yager was still at the helm. Since then, Dead Island 2's development has changed hands multiple times, and seeing as how Yager was fired over creative differences, it's unclear how much of their original vision has endured over the past five years.
