Games Done Quick, the bi-annual speedrunning spectacle known for raising millions of dollars for charity, has announced that it will be moving its summer event online due to ongoing public safety concerns surrounding Covid-19.
Originally scheduled for a week in June, GDQ's organizers postponed the event to August in hopes that by then it would be safe to bring a bunch of pajama-clad speedrunners together under one roof, but that does not appear to be the case.
The event will proceed with its previously re-scheduled dates, occupying the week of August 16th through the 23rd. However, rather than taking place at a Holiday Inn in Bloomington, MN, Summer Games Done Quick will take place on the internet.
With ongoing civil unrest (rightfully) claiming headlines in recent weeks, it's easy to forget that the world is still very much in the midst of a pandemic. Public gatherings are still a significant health hazard, and organizers continue to be faced with having to either cancel, postpone, or move their events online.
