Call of Duty Modern Warfare
Moderner Warfare

Let me just get this out of the way - I played the sh** out of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare when it launched on last-gen consoles back in 2007. It was revolutionary at the time for realistically portraying the brutality of modern day conflicts - something that an angsty teenager like myself thoroughly enjoyed at the time. I was definitely a different person back then.

Maybe it's a sort of "first-person shooter fatigue" I've gone through in recent years, but every entry in the Call of Duty franchise since then has seemed lackluster by comparison and has rarely held my attention, if gained it at all. Perhaps it's the rampant online toxicity that seems to have only worsened with time, but then again I would be lying to myself if I didn't admit to contributing to that problem in my younger years. In any case, the point is that with the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, developer Infinity Ward captured lightening in a bottle, which is ultimately what lead to publisher Activision making Call of Duty a yearly event. Now, 12 years later they are trying to do so again.

What started out as a rumor that didn't seem at all surprising in the first place has now been confirmed . As pointed out by Jason Schreier over at Kotaku, news of this apparent "soft reboot" had recently been disclosed to an exclusive poole of press and influencers, and today it was ousted by Youtuber LongSensation on social media.

So yea, the next entry in the long-running Modern Warfare series is going to be titled "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare", and it's being developed by the same studio that gave us the original. It's unclear whether or not it's going to focus on the "modern" version of warfare that would've been technically "modern" in 2007, or if it is going to advance the definition of "modern" to include what would be considered "modern" by today's standards. Though, considering the gaming industry's latest trend of repackaging nostalgia and selling it back to us, I would bet that it is likely going to be the former.
