The upcoming Modern Warfare reboot will feature a common story thread between its single-player and co-op modes, according to an insider scoop over at PlayStation Lifestyle. This new direction is notably different to how previous Call of Duty's handled their sub-modes, with any sort of narrative arch being self-contained, standalone mini stories at best, or sometimes even non-existent in the case of horde-esque survival modes that would see the player fighting off endless waves of enemies until an inevitable and grizzly demise.

Details are currently slim in regards to how Infinity Ward will be implementing its shared narrative or how the two modes will converge throughout the game, but Jacob Minkoff, director of Modern Warfare's main campaign, went on record to say that the game will feature a "single-player storyline that goes directly into the co-op storyline. No Stop.". This seems to imply that the ending of Modern Warfare's campaign is where the co-op's story picks up, which would be really cool since we typically have to wait for the next numbered entry before receiving any sort of continuity. That said, I would personally prefer the inclusion of two parallel narratives running side-by-side, converging at meaningful points in the story to provide some much-appreciated scope and synergy, adding purpose and depth to the story's different moving pieces. Often times the characters in co-op modes are relegated to being unnamed cogs of a significantly lesser importance than the main campaign's principal characters, so it's especially interesting when given the opportunity to interact with those characters from a different perspective. I think those moments tend to highlight the main character's level of badass by demonstrating why they are so unkillable when not being haphazardly controlled by the player.

In any case, Minkoff also pointed out that we won't be hearing any more concrete details about Modern Warfare's co-op mode until later, so for now it's just speculation as usual.
