Epic Games Store Crashes due to GTA V Demand

The Epic Game Store is having a bit of a traffic problem. No, not in the way that some Steam loyalists might be hoping. Rather, the platform is seeing such a massive influx of traffic that it is, at the time of this writing, unable to keep up with the demand. How could this happen, you might be wondering? No, it isn't that ****** ***** Carol Baskins. As part of their summer sale, The Epic Games Store is luring shoppers in with the promise of a free copy of Grand Theft Auto V, which, much to their detriment, seems to be working.

Currently, both the website and launcher are sitting pretty displaying a 500 error, which is no doubt due to the sheer volume of users that are trying to log in and claim their prize.

It's hard to deny the allure of a free game, especially one as tantalizing as Grand Theft Auto V. Despite going on its 7th year since launching in 2013, one could argue that the game - especially its online component, GTA Online - is as much of a destination for current and would-be players now than ever before.

It wouldn't be too far out of the realm of possibility that GTA Online's ongoing Alien War phenomena might be partly responsible for the current surge in interest, with players wanting to get in on the action just in time for tomorrow's loosely coordinated showdown.
