Red Barrels, the folks behind famed survival-horror series Outlast, have announced that they are hard at work on a new entry in the series. Rather than being a direct sequel to the previous game, this new title will be a spin-off of sorts that leverages Outlast's signature brand of suffering to create a unique, social-focused experience that supports up to four players. After all, shared trauma brings people together.

They're calling it The Outlast Trials, and it's set in the "middle of the Cold War era." While it exists within the same Outlast universe, or OCU - if you will - as the first two games, Trials puts players in the roles of some thoroughly unfortunate test subjects, whether voluntarily or not, in some mysterious experiment.

Though The Outlast Trials takes the series in a new direction by focusing on multiplayer, rest assured that the game is entirely playable as a solo experience if you're into that sort of thing. According to Red Barrels co-founder David Chateauneuf, this new experience aims to "bring fear and anxiety to millions of players, whether they go through the experiments alone or with friends."

Aside from a teaser image, details are scant at the moment. Although they insist that the game is in "the early stages of production", Red Barrels promises that more information will be coming in the near future.

In the meantime, you can watch Paxton O'Neal explore his own personal caverns of madness as he plays through Outlast 2 in its entirety. Don't worry, his screaming has since been reduced to a barely audible whimper, and the doctor says he should make a full recovery. You can check those videos out here.
