In an absolute surprise that no one has known about since at least May, Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 5. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said, after the announcement, "It's nice to be able to say it. Like a giant burden has been lifted from my shoulders." Okay, okay, while we all knew the system would be called the PlayStation 5, I suppose the company couldn't explicitly call it that until it was time, because of corporate bureaucracy that makes absolute, total sense. But now at least we have the following information officially confirmed:

  • Hardware-accelerated ray-tracing, a la Nvidia RTX
  • AMD Ryzen and Navi custom chip solutions
  • Pretty dope SSD technology
  • Granular installation of games (Only the multiplayer/single player portions, etc.)
  • Haptic feedback and adaptive resistance for controller triggers
  • Controllers charge their larger-than-the-DualShock-4 batteries off USB-C

However, we don't know certain details, such as: what the device or UI will look like, the official release date for Holiday 2020, what launch titles will be available, or when the company will just admit to everyone that the controller is named the DualShock 5, but we'll keep you posted.
